Peer Financial Educator Co-Op Job Description


Program Overview

The Nusenda Center for Financial Capability is housed in the Student Success Center and provides a comprehensive financial wellness program aimed at helping alleviate student’s financial stress by helping overcome financial barriers. The goal of financial wellness education is to educate students about the value of enhancing their financial capability skills through a diverse set of individual and group services to include one-on-one peer coaching and monthly workshops. The position entails working 20 hours per week and includes, but not limited to, the following:

Duties:

  • Receive training and certifications in financial literacy to help assist with the ongoing execution of the program. 
  • Consult with students on budget management and financial responsibility as needed in one-on-one meetings. 
  • Assist in preparing and delivering presentations to classes, student groups, incoming freshmen, transfer students and their families on student financial capability topics such as credit, student loans, money management and budgeting. 
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of monthly workshops during each semester on various financial topics to incentivize students to continue to build their financial management skills. Also track attendance and baseline utilization records from these workshops. 
  • Assist in the Annual Financial Wellness Fair and create activities/special programming for Financial Wellness Month.
  • Table for NCFC/financial literacy during New Student Orientation tabling opportunities each week during freshman/transfer and orientation sessions as needed. 
  • Assist in developing educational materials and educational presentations for specific populations within the NMSU community.
  • Assist in the promotion and marketing of the Center for Financial Capability and its services.
  • Assist in the evaluation of programs and collect surveys related to financial capability training and their efficacy. 
  • Attend monthly performance check-ins to evaluate fellow performance and duties, as well as receive/provide program feedback in areas to improve the program. 

Job Requirements:

  • Maintain confidentiality agreements with students. 
  • Experience in giving presentations/public speaking to large groups of people. 
  • Aptitude and interest in conducting research on financial topics. 
  • An interest in finance and/or financial management. 
  • Familiarity with special populations and ability to connect with diverse populations. 
  • Must be able to complete NFEC/ CFEI Certification within the first two months of employment.

Co-Op Qualifications:

  • When you apply for this position, your application will be screened by the Co-op/Internship office to confirm you meet co-op/internship program eligibility requirements. If you don’t meet the minimum co-op/internship program requirements, your application will be withdrawn from the applicant pool.
  • Must attend a Co-op/Internship Orientation with the NMSU Office of Experiential Learning prior to hire date.
  • Must submit a Request and Experience Form (RAEF) to the NMSU Office of Experiential Learning prior to start date.
  • Must have a declared major in one of the following: Accountancy, Economics, Finance, Marketing, General Business, Information Systems, International Business, Management or Family and Consumer Sciences Education.
  • Must have been enrolled in at least 12 credit hours prior semester and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Be classified as a sophomore or junior.
  • Be committed to work for at least two full academic years.
